Sorry that I haven't updated in awhile. It's been very slow for tattoos lately. Bummer. Anyway, this piece was something I worked on recently that I enjoyed doing. The face needs to be tightened up a bit and he ended up wanting something different for the webs, so the negative space ones that I made look kinda awkward, (probably going to fill them in with color eventually. Anyway. Yeah.

are you mixing your own wash or do you use something like sumi's premixed? i usually do my own, but i never get it quite that smooth.

I mix my own. I think the way I get it to come out so smooth is my coloring in small circles and not pepper shading. I also make sure to go over the same spot a couple of times.

ok, yeah. i've spent a lot of time with "old school" tattooers. don't get me wrong, i love the style. it's timeless and it's fun to do, but i'm inspired by nick baxter's work. i finally got in with a realist, so after a few years of strugling to learn how to get the effects i want, he showed me in about 1 week.
we were laughing about pepper farming last night. i think the build up is exactly what he was showing me. for heavier color too.
can't wait to try it out. i'll be posting some new ones soon. please feel free to critique them.
